Research
Our research covers the disciplines of agribusiness, agricultural economics, resource economics, community development and systems analysis, and has a strong applied focus.
We collaborate extensively with agricultural, environmental and social scientists from other disciplines and conduct research in Australia and overseas. Together, we investigate issues and emerging opportunities in areas of industry and market development, agricultural development and food security, natural resource management, and rural community development.
Our experts are members of a range of formal and informal centres and groups.
Agribusiness
Our research in agribusiness and agricultural and resource economics includes investigations into:
- socio-economic analysis of farming systems in developing countries
- value-chain analysis and links to sustainable rural development
- improving agribusiness performance in Australia and developing countries
- analysis of agricultural markets and policies
- management of natural resources.
Rural development
Our rural development researchers work with communities to foster their strength and resilience, underpinning the improvement of people’s quality of life and the management of the landscapes they depend on. In agricultural extension, we help rural people and scientists work together to better manage agricultural enterprises and natural resources.
Our research projects focus on:
- community engagement, planning and development
- social aspects of sustainability and resilience
- community partnerships in integrated resources management
- understanding and managing social-ecological systems
- co-management of natural resources.
Research themes and impact
Our research efforts and impacts encompass five broad themes of agricultural economics and development, agribusiness management, natural resource and environmental management, rural community development, and systems approaches to rural issues.
